Students joining MBA programs in Barcelona are often full of emotions: as new born MBAs they are getting used to making new networks, meeting new people from all over the world, experiencing real Spain, studying long hours, etc. Studying for an MBA develops many of the characteristics that impact MBA graduates for the rest of their life. But how not to get lost with so many new things going around? How to benefit the most from your MBA studies?
In this article we share the experience of an MBA graduate who provides his thoughts and gives all future MBA students some pieces of advice on how to enhance their MBA experience and take from the studies in the business school as much as possible.
Be loyal to your business school: Once MBA, always an MBA. Becoming an MBA is one of those things that will stay with us during the whole professional life. The more we do for a business school where we studied, the more we contribute to developing its brand and increase our own value in the eyes of potential employers and business community in general.
Develop a good career strategy: building your professional career is like keeping fit and beautiful. It requires a lot of hard work on a daily basis. Developing a career is not about getting the job of your dreams. The principle that works here: the more you get the more you aspire for. It is just like going to the gym and keeping fit – the best advice is not to kill yourself in a single training but to work hard by following a good strategy which will allow you to realize the results after some time and not instantly.
Experience mentoring: it is about two-way process. Get yourself a good mentor and become a mentor yourself. You cannot imagine how much you learn just by listening and by giving or receiving advice.
Support your MBA classmates: During your studies, you can get so much help from your MBA friends that you can only be grateful for staying in touch with them after you graduate. Try to develop these relationships from the beginning. Later on they will be very helpful and uselful. Only remember that in order to receive, it is important to give, too.
Get a learning spirit: the MBA is just the starting point of a long learning experience because life itself is the most complex journey in which we learn every day. So we must keep our eyes and spirits open to keep on learning and studying different subjects. Competition in the business world is tough and is increasing. The education received in a business school is a strong differentiating point and a competitive advantage and the more we “know”, the more relevant we become.
Follow a strong code of ethics: always work adhering to positive ethics, principles and values. This is the only way MBA students can create a positive impact in the business world. Believe that it is possible to be profitable and sustainable at the same time.
Don´t forget about a good sense of humor: at the end of the day MBA students just want to have fun, right? Try to be cool all the time: Have a difficult day? Still not earning enough? Don´t be disappointed. Instead, assess your skills and opportunities, build a strategy, and work, work, work… always smiling and being happy. Keeping a positive attitude makes a big difference.
Have a vision for everything: All MBA graduates have a strong vision about the future and work hard to get it. Achieving what you want requires consistency, discipline and hard work. Never give up and find opportunities during the challenging times. Don´t be afraid of success!
Become an ambassador of your business school: a good MBA student from a business school in Barcelona is a good ambassador. Regardless of where MBA graduates are, there is always an opportunity for them to showcase their talents acquired during MBA programs in Barcelona. It could be promoting the business school during different events, inviting people to apply to your MBA in Barcelona, etc. There is always a chance to promote your alma mater.
